Black August seeks to specifically celebrate parts of the Black freedom movement that Black History Month and Juneteenth do not, and for Tierra Williams, Black August is “a celebration where we recognize the different achievements, revolutions and situations that have occurred during this month”.

Williams, chairman of the 3/20 Coalition, said Black August began in 1971 with the death of prominent political prisoner and activist George Jackson.

“Black August was invented when George Jackson and his brother were killed in California prisons after being incarcerated for an insignificant amount of money,” Williams said.

Jackson’s death in August 1971 launched what became known as Black August. Originally arrested and convicted for stealing $70 from a gas station, Jackson was sentenced to a year to life in prison, according to The New York Times.

According to the Times, this “arbitrary” sentence led to him remaining in prison for the next and final 11 years of his life. His years in prison ignited his political ambition and he became a leader and inspiration for the Black Liberation Movement.

From prison, Jackson and other inmates dedicated themselves to raising the political awareness of their fellow inmates in the California state prison system. Jackson and others started the San Quentin State Prison chapter of the Black Panther Party, of which Jackson was a marshal.

Jackson was murdered on August 21, 1971 by a prison guard, but the facts surrounding his death are widely debated. Law enforcement authorities at the time said Jackson smuggled a gun into the jail and was killed while trying to escape.

According to the Times, Jackson became a symbol of the movement after he and two other black prisoners killed a white guard at Soledad State Prison in 1970. The Black Liberation Movement was not concerned with the morality of murders, but rather by the fact that black prisoners were “treated like subhumans,” The Times reported.

The movement also believed that too many black prisoners were not being held as criminals, but rather as political prisoners. This has led the Black August celebration to focus specifically on certain issues such as political imprisonment.

Angela Davis, a political activist, wrote in her essay “Political Prisoners, Prisons and Black Liberation” that minority prisoners “maintain that they are political prisoners in the sense that they are largely the victims of an oppressive political-economic order, quickly becoming aware of the underlying causes of their victimization.

This is the message Jackson and his fellow inmates have chosen to capitalize on and teach their peers.

According to Liberation School and The Black Collective, Black August is a celebration to honor “the fallen freedom fighters of the Black Liberation Movement, to call for the release of political prisoners in the United States, to condemn the oppressive conditions of American prisons, and to emphasize the continued importance of the black liberation struggle.

Williams and Lorraine Jones, president of the State College National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, reiterated that sentiment.

“It’s very important to highlight the black resistance within the movement,” Jones said. “It really is a moment for us to reflect, especially for those who work with the movement within social justice.”

Although Black History Month and June 16 have been publicly known and celebrated for many years, Black August is a celebration and commemoration many have yet to hear of, and Jones said that this month was not “at the peak of our history”.

“It’s another way for us to educate people about a part of history that has been suppressed over the years,” Jones said.

Williams said the public’s lack of knowledge about Black August comes from “people [not wanting] acquaint you with some history regarding black or African people in America.

“I believe a lot of our history has been buried,” Williams said. “But it’s starting to get a kind of traction because people are forced to pay attention to this stuff. There’s still more to come.

Over the years, the month of August has remained symbolic for the black community. Historic events such as the Watts Rebellion, the Haitian Revolution, the Nat Turner Rebellion, the Fugitive Slave Law Convention, and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom all happened in August.

Even celebrities and symbolic figures of the Black Liberation Movement were born or died in August, such as Marcus Garvey, Marsha P. Johnson and Fred Hampton who were born in August, and Emmett Till, Chadwick Boseman and George Jackson who died.

However, there is more to the Black August story. According to Liberation School and The Black Collective, Black August fosters commitment to “higher levels of discipline.”

This may include fasting, physical exercise, political study, and political engagement.

Latisha Franklin said Black August is not just about education today, but also about fasting. The Black August Fast Breaker was hosted by Black 2 Reality, owned by Franklin and Williams to “inspire black excellence” at Webster’s Bookstore and Cafe in downtown State College.

“During the month of August, you’re supposed to not eat from sunrise to sunset,” Franklin (a graduate in biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology) said. “You are also supposed to eat healthy things; so there’s no alcohol, no tobacco, and you break the fast with a unity party.

Black 2 Reality held a Black August quiz at the beginning of August as an “educational play”, then at the end of the month “we get together, share more information and break this fast as community,” Franklin said.

The Black 2 Reality quiz and breakfast feast helped bring the communities of Penn State and State College together, or, as Franklin puts it, “town and dress.”

“We try to bring communities together, as well as educate communities and bring black knowledge to life,” Franklin said.

As leaders of the State College and black communities, Franklin, Jones and Williams each said Black August meant something different to them.

For Franklin, Black August represents “the ability to use [her] voice.”

“Being able to speak and have people come in and want to listen means a lot,” Franklin said. “We have the opportunity to do what we love to do.”

Jones said for her, this month is “a moment of reflection.”

“It’s really a time to reflect on the struggles of people who have made a lot of sacrifices to make a lot of instrumental things happen,” Jones said. “It’s a time to reflect on how many people lost their lives in this struggle for people to have the opportunities we have now.”

And for Williams, Black August means revolution.

“There is a better future. Every year, not just in America, someone did something to challenge the status quo or what the mainstream media says they shouldn’t be doing,” Williams said. “I’m starting to realize that it’s okay to stand up for what’s right, even when you’re alone.”

Interest in fad diets has probably never been more enduring and temporal than in the age of social media. While the interest in weight loss is constant, it’s rarely a devotion to a particular diet or a consistency in dieting long enough for it to work. It’s also important to be as scientific as possible when embarking on diets, to ensure that you’re doing yourself a favor and not a disservice. As always, diets come in different sizes and flavors, some stemming from quackery, while others are rooted in scientific calorie control paired with specific exercise. It is essential to focus on the right dimensions for yourself and to continue. In what is likely the first such data from India on the matter, the article “Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Weight Loss in Asian Indian Adults with Obesity,” claims that the technique intermittent fasting (IF) may actually aid weight loss and have additional effects. health benefits if one pays attention to what one eats during the eating period of the day.

The IS technique

Sheryl’s article. S et al, is a collaboration between Mumbai-based nutritionists and the Chennai-based Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) and was recently published in the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India. But more recently, the trend of following fad diets to lose weight fast has caught up. IF is one such diet and is considered to be fanciful, doable.

However, she adds that there are many versions circulating, including variations in the number of hours of fasting, the number of meals eaten during the eating period, and what is eaten during that time. With expert guidance from the MDRF who also provided the study structure, a total of 32 adult individuals, male and female, overweight or obese, received the diet in January 2020, just before the pandemic hit. Participants followed 12 to 16 hours of fasting with a 12 to 8 hour eating period for three months.

Ms. Sheryl says the participants were followed monthly for three months. Due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, clinical anthropometric measurements were not possible after the intervention. Therefore, participants were asked to send photos of their weight and waist measurements on WhatsApp or by email, in addition to information on the duration and frequency of the fast and the data collected at baseline. Analysis of the data after the intervention, according to the article, showed a significant reduction in average weight, waist circumference, BMI (body mass index), calorie intake and increased of protein intake. Body fat % and visceral fat % showed a clinically relevant reduction.

Ranjani Harish, corresponding author of the study, and senior scientist and head of the Department of Translational Research, MDRF, said the big issue with weight loss measures is sustainability. Here, the fasting hours were slowly and gradually increased, in a way that trial participants were comfortable with. Advice was provided not only for diet, but also for sleep, stress management and exercise. Ms. Ranjani says: “We found in this small study that IC can be done in a sustainable way. Patients didn’t think a 14-hour fasting period was so difficult.” The plan they were given emphasized regulating what was eaten, having a light dinner early, increasing protein levels and watching calorie counts. “Most patients said they could easily manage the fast, and all participants showed positive results – weight loss and fat loss, when assessed,” she explains.

“We deliberately excluded pregnant people, nursing mothers or people with diabetes in this study. Their calorie intake and meal periodicity must be carefully calibrated. We also do not recommend IF for children,” adds Ms Sheryl .

Interestingly, post-intervention qualitative interviews with trial participants also reported a reduction in acidity, bloating, and the regularity of their monthly cycles. Ms. Ranjani goes on to add that the results of this limited but real study were encouraging enough to plan a proper randomized controlled trial among a larger group of participants with diverse needs, this time perhaps without the constraints of conducting a study for total containment.

Elon Musk revealed over the weekend that he’s embraced intermittent fasting – weeks after the billionaire faced trolls online after photos surfaced of him lying shirtless on a yacht near Mykonos.

Musk, 50, told his followers on Sunday that he weighed “over 20 pounds [9kg] compared to my maximum (unhealthy) weight”.

He said that occasional fasting had contributed to the success of his recent diet, the New York Post reported.

“On the advice of a good friend, I have been fasting periodically and feeling healthier,” Musk tweeted.

Musk referenced his use of the “Zero” fitness app and described it as “pretty good.”

The app bills itself as a resource for users to “unleash the power of intermittent fasting to lose weight and improve your metabolic health.”

In a tweet to another follower, Musk said he also lifts weights “a little”.

Musk caused a stir on social media in July after photos showed the Tesla boss looking pasty as he relaxed on a luxury yacht with William Morris Endeavor boss Ari Emanuel and his wife. new wife Sarah Staudinger.

The world’s richest individual poked fun at himself on Twitter as the pictures started popping up in memes.

“Haha damn, maybe I should take my shirt off more often… release the pinch!! (already back at the factory btw),” Musk tweeted at the time.

Sugar is widely known as one of the most addictive substances in our food.

As a result, sugar consumption in the United States has steadily increased over the past decade.

The average daily intake of added sugars for an adult in the United States in 2017-2018 was 17 teaspoons a day. This is much higher than the American Heart Association (AHA) recommended intake, which is 9 teaspoons per day for men and 6 teaspoons a day for women.

With growing consumer awareness of the health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption, companies are stepping up efforts to reduce the sugar content of their foods and beverages.

Companies also often use these discounts as advertising claims on product packaging, such as “no added sugar” or “30% less sugar.”

However, marketing claims like these can lead consumers to make incorrect assumptions about the overall nutritional value of the food. For example, just because a particular brand of breakfast cereal claims to have “reduced sugar” doesn’t mean it’s a healthy food. This is called the “health halo” effect.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Kristin Jürkenbeck, explained for Medical News Today:

“The health halo effect means that a single characteristic is understood to signal an overall favorable nutrient profile. Marketing claims, such as 30% less sugar or high protein content, can overestimate the health value of a food product. These buzzwords make foods appear healthier in the consumer’s perception than they actually are.

In their study, Dr. Jürkenbeck and his team assessed whether food labeling – specifically the Nutri-Score label used in Europe – could help prevent these false assumptions.

To assess the impact of Nutri-Score on food perceptions, researchers conducted an online survey of 1,103 people in Germany.

In the survey, respondents were asked to rate the nutritional profiles of three products – the instant cappuccino, the chocolate muesli and the oatmeal drink – from very healthy to very unhealthy.

Participants were randomly assigned different product claims, such as no added sugar, less sweet, or 30% less sugar.

They received these claims with and without the accompanying Nutri-Score label.

The results showed that consumers pay the most attention to ingredients when buying food, followed by sugar and fat content, confirming the importance of sugar when consumers choose what to buy.

Participants ranked chocolate muesli as the most unhealthy product, followed by instant cappuccino and oatmeal drink, which had a positive health image.

Importantly, the researchers also found that participants’ health ratings of foods changed based on nutrient claims.

For example, in the case of chocolate muesli, health checks improved when the 30% less sugar claim was present, confirming the health halo effect.

However, when the Nutri-Score label was also displayed – a score of C or D on the scale – it corrected for the effect of the claim.

“The study shows the great difficulties encountered by consumers in assessing the nutritional quality of food in a realistic way”, sums up Dr. Jürkenbeck.

His article recommends that the Nutri-Score label be made mandatory, at least when marketing claims are made on the packaging, to avoid misleading consumers about the health value of a food.

The researchers say other measures such as sugar taxes would also help, but would be more difficult to implement.
