Diabetes: Treatment may include fenugreek

Diabetes is proving an insurmountable challenge for health services, with rates rising at full speed. Researchers have indicated that the increase in the number of obesity cases is one of the main causes of the diabetes crisis, but high sugar intake is another culprit. Fortunately, some foods have strong blood sugar lowering effects, a plant having levels 25% lower when eaten regularly.

Fenugreek has been touted as an antidote for centuries because its benefits are many and powerful.

It is mainly recognized for its anti-cancer properties, with a series of studies showing that it is able to inhibit the proliferation of malignant cells.

But the edible spice has benefits that go far beyond its anti-cancer properties, and some researchers have suggested that it may prevent diabetes as well.

A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirms such claims, showing that blood sugar levels drop dramatically after consuming fenugreek.

The research team noted, “The fenugreek diet significantly reduced fasting blood sugar and improved glucose tolerance testing.

“There was a 54% reduction in urinary glucose effort over 24 hours. Serum total cholesterol LDL and VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides were also significantly reduced.

“The HDL cholesterol fraction, however, has remained unchanged. These results indicate the utility of fenugreek seeds in the management of diabetes.

Research suggests that these effects are attributable to the soluble fiber in the spice, which helps lower blood sugar by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates.


The researchers noted elsewhere in the article: “The Fenugreek diet dramatically reduced fasting blood sugar and improved glucose tolerance testing, and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were all significantly reduced.”

The study was performed to assess the cholesterol and blood sugar lowering effects of fenugreek over the course of eight weeks.

Diabetic patients were given 10 grams of powdered fenugreek seeds daily mixed with yogurt or soaked in hot water.

The researchers continued, “The results showed that fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglycerides (TG) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol decreased significantly (25%, 30% and 30, 6% respectively) after taking fenugreek seeds soaked in hot water. “

“While there have been no significant changes […] in cases who have consumed it mixed with yogurt.

In addition to the aforementioned benefits, the researchers suggested that the seed may also be effective in treating constipation, male impotence, hair loss, and kidney conditions.

But as with other hypoglycemic herbs, fenugreek could drop levels to suboptimal levels if consumed too frequently, leading to hypoglycemia.

Other potential side effects of consuming fenugreek can include diarrhea, nausea, and other digestive tract conditions.
