Few entrepreneurs are aware of the impact their diet has on their mental health and how the foods they eat dampen their ability to cope with stress. Over the past few years, our collective mental state has declined dramatically due to the quarantine isolation and poor food choices we have made. Being in business for ourselves has created a unique response to understanding how much food can affect our mental state. Food also influences our ability to perform at the levels required as business owners to maintain peak performance.

Each year more and more research is published showing how the foods we eat affect our ability to cope with the daily stress of owning a business. In addition to how eating the wrong foods dramatically increases our anxiety, depression, and general discomfort. Mental disorders of all types affect an increasing number of people every year. Current research estimates that over 26% of adults suffer from some form of mental disorder: anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia to name a few. This number is increasing every year, especially among those who are in business for themselves.

The science behind food and our moods

As entrepreneurs, we need to fuel our system both physically and mentally to keep the creative juices flowing for growth and sustainability. Choosing the right fuel can be the difference between the upper echelons of success and the ho-hum doldrums of just getting out of it.

Foods high in simple carbohydrates, saturated fat, and sugar are known to increase inflammation in the brain and affect insulin levels which in turn affect how neurotransmitters work. These SAD (Standard American Diet) foods trigger the fight or flight response in our body, further increasing the inflammatory response. It becomes a vicious cycle that feeds on itself becoming an endless loop. These foods are also extremely low in vitamins, minerals, proteins, and amino acids which are all building blocks of how the brain and body communicate with itself. If we don’t have the building blocks to create dopamine and serotonin, our nervous system becomes “depressed”. We feel hopeless and develop anxiety which can even lead to suicidal adulation. Our nervous system becomes very sensitive to the stress response when this happens, leading us further down the path of mental illness.

How to eat healthier to improve our entrepreneurial mental health

Restructuring what you eat will greatly influence your mental health outcomes. If the brain is not fed properly, your ability to be creative and anticipate how your business operates is greatly diminished. Your business and your future depend on an optimally fueled and nurtured organic system that allows for easy adaptation as well as the ability to grow rapidly. Increasing your intake of vegetables and fruits with what I call the Paleo-RAINBOW (All Colors of the Rainbow) Diet will increase the number of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and meat. organic grass-fed that your body needs as the building blocks of our neurotransmitters.

The higher the nutrient density of food, the healthier, more adaptive, and more growing your state of mind. Consider having a cup of each color of the rainbow each day. You don’t put crappy fuel in your car, why put it in your body?

You can also alleviate inflammation and mental health issues with supplements. There are some very important specific supplements that you can take to boost brain function and reduce mental health issues. The basic supplements that can be added are:

  • A B-complex formula, which decreases and supports the nervous system as well as detoxification of the whole body

  • Essential fatty acids (Omega 3). You want a higher DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) content in your supplement because it is very specific to brain function and brain plasticity. As a society, our blood is low in omega 3, which leads to cellular rigidity throughout the body: blood, brain, vascular system, and in men leads to erectile dysfunction.

  • Folate: Getting your methylation genetics and blood status checked is key to knowing if you have folate issues in your body.

  • Nootropics are supplements that supercharge your brain function. These are supplements that can really boost the brain once you’ve cut down on all the other issues at hand. In other words, don’t worry about it until you fix the underlying issues.

Your mental state is a direct reflection of your surroundings. What you surround yourself with and what you feed your body will be the result of your system. Garbage in and around is equal to garbage. A poor body and mind equals bad, unsuccessful business. Choosing to fuel your nervous system with your body with the best possible fuels (the paleo-rainbow diet as discussed earlier) will lead your system to next level optimization and peak state performance with your business. . The old adage of eating right and exercising is still key today. Strong body, strong mind, strong business.
