Jussie Smollett starved himself in jail.
The 40-year-old actor – who was found guilty of lying about being the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in 2019 and originally sentenced to 150 days in jail in 2021 but was released after just six days behind bars – admitted that while briefly behind bars he “fasted” for almost a week in order to achieve a “clear mind”.
He said: “I was there for six and a half days. I fasted for six and a half days. I was fasting because that’s what we do in my family. As if we were fasting for clarity … I have never in my life, at least in my adult life, been as clear-headed as I was for those six and a half days… I fasted until whether or not I was going to stay in there for those five and a half months, I just wanted to know what my life was going to be like!
The ‘Empire’ star – who was found guilty of paying two men to attack her before being found guilty of five counts of disorderly conduct – continued to protest her innocence and claimed that the prison system was “not meant” for self-improvement.
Speaking on SiriusXM’s ‘Sway in the Morning’, he added: “While I’m sitting here I’m like, ‘I know I didn’t do that’, but you should be another type of person to really seek and try to find redemption in this. This place is not meant for redemption. This place is not meant to bring you out better than when you were there.
“There’s something about being in there and having no choice but to surrender – not to the system, not to a judge or a bunch of old white men, ironically explaining to you the history of hate crimes and lynching. And you’re sitting there and going, ‘What? Who the hell are you?” But you surrender to yourself and you surrender to – you’re just left there with yourself and your thoughts and those walls.”
