Berkano Foods, the New Zealand plant-based convenience food start-up, is now preparing to launch a range of alternative meats. The company recently closed a crowdfunding campaign with more than NZ $ 30,800, which will fuel the expansion of its product portfolio, which also includes new frozen vegan pizzas, sauces and desserts.
Berkano Foods is set to join local New Zealand alternative protein brands, after raising more than NZ $ 30,800 through a crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMe. The funds will be used to launch new convenient 100% plant-based products, lower prices, expand distribution in Australia and ultimately launch its very first vegan meat line.
Grow in vegetable meat
With demand for plant-based meat at an all time high, Berkano Foods, which was founded by Britteny Bryan and Nicholas Harlow of Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2017, is now entering space. While he hasn’t revealed any specific products, their “ultimate goal” is to develop their own line of plant-based meats that “aren’t here in New Zealand.”
According to a Vegeteconomist report, the products could include vegan beef, lamb and pork, and are expected to hit retail shelves by 2022.
The Christchurch-based startup will join the small but growing cohort of vegan meat players in the country, which includes vegan ground meat makers Vince, hemp-based meat brand The Craft Meat Co and Sunfed Foods, a startup. of herbal chicken.
Affordable vegan ready meals
The funds will also allow Berkano Foods to further expand its line of ready-to-eat meals and other plant-based retail products. The brand is well-known as New Zealand’s first 100% vegan meal maker, with convenient reheatable dishes like Mac & Cheese, Burrito Bowls, and Butter Chicken Curry.
Currently, the brand sells its product line at more than 200 locations across the country, but is now considering expanding its distribution network. It is also considering entry into the Australian market, which has seen its herbal retail sales increase 46% year-over-year in 2020.
New products developed by Berkano Foods include a line of desserts with cheesecakes, cooking sauces such as vegan cheese sauce and curry sauces, as well as new frozen pizzas.
In keeping with the company’s mission to make plant-based food accessible to everyone, he says the fresh capital will also help keep costs down and sell its products at an affordable price.
“We want to bring down the price of products to help stop the price increase that is happening by non-vegan brands selling vegan products. Which ultimately stops people from trying to eat vegan, ”Bryan and Harlow wrote.
