If you’re on a keto diet, are allergic to gluten, or really want to make Cheez-Its at home, this recipe from TikTok is about to become your new go-to snack. It only takes two ingredients to make – cheese and salt – and I can confirm that the result is simply delicious. After a little bit of preparation, all you have to do is cook for 25 minutes, and they’re good to go.

TikTokers have used everything from colby jack to sharp cheddar cheese, so it seems like any type of cheese is a fair game, although I steer clear of the creamier cheeses which won’t be as crispy. I’ve found that the cheddar works best for a crispier Cheez-It, and while technically the gouda works too, it ended up being slightly more chewy than I had hoped.

As stated by TikTok users @kortneyandkarlee, you will start with four slices of any cheese of your choice, which you then cut into four even smaller pieces and sprinkle with salt before piercing with a straw to create the signature Cheez-It hole center. . Honestly, that straw step ended up being pretty unnecessary. When the cheese is bubbling in the oven, the large hole in the center is replaced with smaller holes all over. It won’t really look like a Cheez-It, and that’s okay. I tested a few oven temperatures to minimize bubbling, but it didn’t affect the results.

I also experimented with string cheese and shredded cheese and found that you can still make Cheez-Its just as easily without the pre-sliced cheese. Keep in mind that the smaller the slice of cheese, the more it spreads. So if you want your Cheez-It to keep its square shape (or any shape) you can easily do that with grated cheese and a cookie cutter – just make sure it’s a metal.

The original recipe called for 25 minutes in the oven at 275 ° F, but I ended up removing them about five minutes earlier because they were almost burning. After allowing them to cool for a full 10 minutes, they effortlessly popped off the parchment paper. It’s hard to compare this recipe to the classic Cheez-Its; the texture is more like Cheez-It Snap’d crackers or potato chips. Either way, they have a really good crunch and they also taste a lot more cheesy. I could probably eat a handful of regular Cheez-Its without thinking, but with these I felt satisfied after just a few, as each chip is balanced with just the right amount of flavor, crunch, and cheese. It’s hard to believe that they only consist of two ingredients, considering they taste better than canned Cheez-Its. Who knew that making such an iconic snack could be so simple and low in carbs? Guess we have to thank TikTok for another innovative food trend.
